Coffee and Cocoa in Peru: there are opportunities beyond the crisis

Overcoming productivity gaps, traceability, environmental commitment and internal consumption can consolidate the sector in Peru.

The international price of coffee is around US $ 89 per quintal, its lowest level in the last decade, pressured by increases in production in the main exporting countries and speculation on stocks. Meanwhile, the price of cocoa is recovering from the sharp fall of 2017, but for the Andean countries, the restrictions imposed by the European Union on cadmium levels are a condition for their prices.

The consumption of chocolate and coffee is widespread in the world. The new lifestyles give priority to these products, betting not only for its flavor or quality, but also for how its production is developed for the areas that provide it. The expansion of coffee shops in Peru, the new coffee brands and, above all, the appearance of a national chocolate industry corroborate this trend.

There is a paradox in this process: more and more informed consumers, more production volume; and the price volatility that affects farmers. Added to this are restrictions and changes in regulation, in taxation, as well as problems of deforestation and carbon emissions.

These issues will be addressed at the 22nd National Coffee and Cocoa Convention, the most continuous technical event in the sector, which will include the participation of leading companies and national and international experts.

In terms of consumption, Kantar World Panel, world leader in data, insight and consultancies, will analyze the trends of the last years of coffee consumption in the Peruvian household: the situation of Lima and the main cities, preferences in the purchase channels, and the differences in consumption habits according to Socio-Economic Level; this according to type of coffee (soluble, grain / ground) and compared to Latin America. 50% of the volume of coffee consumed in Peruvian households is ground grain, there being brand rotation.

In production, Alvaro Llobet de Loto del Café will show the main coffee management systems in the world, explaining the differences in productivity obtained by the leading countries and what are the opportunities for improvement for the Peruvian case, particularly for the reduction of costs in the increasingly competitive world market.

Traceability and environmental standards are market needs, not only to reward and recognize efforts of products and marketers, but to achieve public commitments. In this line, the merger of Rainforest Alliance with UTZ Certified marks a new era in certified markets, the launch of this new brand will shed light on the goals in the field and in consumption that we will see for this important segment.

It will also present the advances of research in cadmium and the solution alternatives for this critical problem of cocoa, deforestation and management of coffee and cocoa plantations in agroforestry systems are an option for the improvement of producers; meanwhile, we will know the diversified supply of fertilizers, both for organic and conventional production. From the State, we will know the process of implementation of liquidation of purchases in the field and the new statistics that will be offered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation for the decision making and monitoring of policies in these crops.

Finally, we will meet the winners of the 2nd Edition of the Cafeteria Contest of Lima - Experience, who are already in the process of evaluation, will be awarded on Friday May 31 during the Convention.

The inscriptions are open.
