With optimism: coffee exports face the effects of the pandemic
Export projections for 2021 foresee a rapid recovery in the sector, overcoming the adversities caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the second wave.
The negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Peruvian economy have been notorious and devastating in many sectors. In the coffee sector, for example, companies, producers and different types of businesses have had to adapt to the new normal. Little by little the sector has been rising, since despite all the negative, people do not stop consuming coffee. Even, both locally and internationally, coffee consumption has increased during the pandemic. In this way, the differential of Peruvian coffee with respect to the New York Stock Exchange was, on average, US $ 20 per quintal in 2020.
This has allowed exports to remain at a similar level to previous years in 2020, without major changes. By 2021, exports are expected to maintain this level, which translates into a constant effort by exporters to satisfy the foreign market despite the situation, and a constant demand for one of our flagship products.

Export projection for 2021: High expectations
In 2020, the exports of coffee beans that Peru exported reached 3.5 million bags, destined for 44 countries.
In 2021, under an optimistic scenario, coffee exports are projected to reach 4 million bags. This would mean a rapid recovery of the global economy in the face of the impacts of covid-19, limited impacts of the second wave (mainly in Europe and the USA), and the reactivation of the majority of offices, coffee shops and restaurants in the main coffee consuming countries. It is also expected the restart of operations of companies that in recent years had limited their participation in the local market.

Export projection for 2021: Intermediate expectation
Under an intermediate scenario, projected exports for 2021 would reach 3.7 million bags. This would mean that the impacts of the second wave in the countries (mainly Europe and the USA) are moderate. The majority reactivation of offices, coffee shops and restaurants in the main coffee consuming countries was required.

Export projection for 2021: Low expectation
In a more conservative scenario, assuming a slow recovery of the global economy in the face of the impacts of covid-19, serious impacts of the second wave (mainly in Europe and the USA, and a slow reactivation of offices, coffee shops and restaurants in the main consuming countries of coffee, exports would reach 3.3 million bags.

Peruvian Coffee Promotion Plan in the foreign market
This year we will carry out the Plan for the Promotion of Peruvian Coffee Consumption in the foreign market; in an effort to consolidate and continue to position our flagship product as one of the favorites in international markets, taking advantage of the variations in the market caused by covid-19, and facing the crisis through reinvention and reactivation economical. The objective of the plan is to position attributes of Peruvian coffee for the international market: its acidity, high altitude production and its commitments to the environmental agreements that Peru has defined for sustainable production.
The Peruvian Coffee Consumption Promotion Plan in the foreign market is part of the Alliance for Sustainable and Competitive Coffee project, executed by the Peruvian Coffee and Cacao Chamber and the National Coffee Board as part of the SeCompetitive Program of the SECO Swiss Cooperation , in collaboration with Helvetas Peru and the Swiss Embassy in Peru.
